Andy Dodge has assembled a collection of photos in honor of his father, Cleveland Dodge.
Cleveland Dodge, a young engineer, moved to Pownal in August of 1951 with his wife and three children, to take a job at Warren Wire Company, a small manufacturing firm on Route 346. He purchased a house on a dirt road at the foot of Mount Anthony, along with 75 acres of land and magnificent views down through the Pownal Valley toward the Berkshire Mountains and Mount Greylock. Since his school days "Clee" had been an inveterate photographer and kept his camera at the ready wherever he went, and even when he stayed at home. His wife, Phyllis, was eager to become a "gentleman farmer" in the true Vermont tradition and they raised cattle, horses, chickens, sheep and ducks at Quarry Hill Farm. Meanwhile, Clee left Warren Wire and started a TeflonĀ® and expanded until finally he sold it in 1967. He used some of the money from the sale to purchase Cedar Hill Farm, just south of his own farm, from the Mason family. This gave him a large stretch of land which serves as an anchor for the Pownal Valley, visible from Route 7 as it winds up the hill towards Pownal Center.
Clee passed away in January 2007 and the family has retained the property which is now being rented to young farmers. His son, Andy Dodge, has amassed the photos and submitted a selection in honor of Pownal's 250th anniversary, to document the growth of the farm, the family and the town itself in the 1950's and early 1960's.
